Material Swatch Kit
2025 | Zenpack

The Zenpack Material Swatch Kit is a premium, tangible archive designed to bridge the gap between industrial design concepts and manufacturing reality. Spanning three curated volumes of premium Japanese stone paper, the collection organizes over 100 high-grade substrates—ranging from tactile textured papers to structural molded pulps—alongside advanced post-print finishes. Built for designers and clients alike, the kit transforms abstract material selection into an intuitive, highly visual, and tactile decision-making process.

The Problem
The original Material Swatch Kit suffered from a frustrating user experience. Accessing the samples required entirely disassembling the booklet, making it difficult to keep its numerous components organized. Furthermore, the inconsistent mix of rectangular material swatches and round foil/emboss samples created visual confusion for users.

The Outcome
We redesigned the swatch kit into a clean, monolithic slipcase box that houses three distinct material volumes. Instead of completely disassembling a booklet to access samples, users can now simply slide out a volume and lift the lid. Inside, the swatches are cleanly stacked in a uniform rectangular format, allowing designers to flick through different substrates and post-print finishes like pages in a library book.

The Evolution
Our process began by mapping out how to consolidate messy, scattered swatches into a unified, partitioned system. Through successive structural prototyping, we shifted our focus from basic storage to user interaction. By introducing a built-in handle to the final enclosure, we gave the kit a distinct physical character while vastly improving the tactile experience of carrying and deploying the material library.
